On the eve of the state elections, a large coalition of experts, unions, and academic activists warned about the plans of extremists in the state of Saxony-Anhalt. This coalition claims that the main goal of this group is fundamental changes in the educational system and universities, which could undermine academic freedoms.
A Threat to Academic Freedom
Academic and research officials in Germany are particularly concerned that the extremists' new approach to issues such as participation in decision-making, gender studies, and research orientations could seriously impact the quality and independence of universities. These changes could lead to a more stringent and controlled educational system that is in no way compatible with the principles of academic freedom.
