Iran is currently holding the funeral of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, its former leader, who was killed four months ago in an airstrike. The ceremony is taking place in Tehran at the city's largest mosque, and it appears that the government has declared a state of emergency for this occasion.
National Mourning in Tehran
Published images show a large crowd and flower arrangements, with many people arriving at the venue early in the morning. Khamenei's body is expected to remain in Tehran for three days before being transferred to the holy city of Qom and also to Iraq. Ultimately, he is set to be buried in his hometown, Mashhad.
Khamenei was killed on February 28 of this year in a targeted airstrike by the Israeli Air Force in Tehran. This incident led to a war between Iran and Israel and the United States that lasted over five weeks. Since early April, a ceasefire has been reported.
