Friedrich Merz, the Chancellor of Germany, elaborated on the government's reform plans in a television program and promised that these plans would be implemented with seriousness. He stated: "We intend to not only take seriously what we have written in the coalition committee meeting but also to put it into action."

Challenges and Opportunities

Merz continued that key decisions were made in the recent coalition committee meeting and reported on the longest discussions regarding fiscal policy. According to him, the existing constraints in the public budget mean that "there is not as much room for maneuver as we would have liked." He expressed a desire for greater realization in this area, emphasizing the necessity of coordination between aspirations and realities, and referred to the extensive responsibilities that lie with the government.

Tax reforms, particularly the reduction of income tax, are set to be implemented from January 1, 2027. Merz emphasizes that these reforms will specifically focus on individuals with middle and low incomes, aiming for these individuals to experience a tax reduction of up to 600 euros annually. In response to criticisms about the inadequacy of these reforms, he said: "I believe this is a significant reduction, but anyone who criticizes today can provide good reasons for its insufficiency."

Ultimately, Merz stressed that to create wealth and improve economic conditions, economic growth must restart. He said: "With a stagnant economy and rising prices, wealth can no longer be created."
