The Promise That Wasn't Broken with Animals: The Story Behind Aldi

In 2021, Aldi made a promise to its customers that delighted many. With the introduction of the "Change of Care" initiative, this discounter announced that it aims to improve animal welfare in its products. Now, after five years, Aldi Süd has reached a milestone and announced that 40 percent of its meat and sausage products are sourced from animals kept in better conditions.

Are the Changes Really Tangible?

However, questions also arise in the meantime. In 2024, Aldi succeeded in producing all its dairy products from cows kept under conditions 3, 4, and 5. The following year, the brand even decided to categorize its meat products based on the type of care, not the type of animal. This move allows customers to shop with awareness of the living conditions of the animals whose meat they consume.

But are these measures enough? Are these changes real and sustainable, or merely a marketing trick to attract customers? In today's world, where consumers are seeking ethical principles and sustainability, these questions become more significant, and it remains to be seen how Aldi will respond to these challenges.
