Road transport in Germany, despite the increasing momentum of electrification, still relies on fossil fuels. Reports indicate that in 2024, fossil fuel consumption in this sector reached over 97 percent. In fact, diesel and gasoline, with a share close to 98 percent, continue to dominate the market.
Worrying Statistics
According to published statistics, energy consumption in road transport in 2024 reached approximately 2,134 petajoules, and this sector was responsible for 22.2 percent of total energy consumption and 21.4 percent of CO2 emissions in Germany. Despite an 11 percent decrease compared to the peak consumption in 2019, these figures still appear concerning.
While electricity consumption in this sector has increased by 32 percent compared to last year, the share of electric vehicles in total consumption is only 1 percent. Meanwhile, diesel with 60.8 percent and gasoline with 37.2 percent still significantly dominate this industry.
Household and Industry Responsibility
Observations indicate that 58 percent of energy consumption in road transport is attributed to households and 42 percent to industries. This division highlights the need for fundamental changes in policies and environmental planning to move towards a more sustainable future.
