At the NATO summit in Turkey, Chancellor Merz tried to find a soul-searching answer, while US President Trump openly criticized and asked who is for whom in this alliance.

Soul-searching challenge

Merz hoped that Turkey's presence in NATO would create a positive and cooperative atmosphere. He sought to build a constructive relationship with Ankara to strengthen defence cooperation.

The United States' role in NATO

Trump, in his sessions, directly criticized and pointed out that in the alliance, each country's role and commitments must be clear. He asked whether the United States is truly ready to support other countries in NATO or not.
