While Somalia has been severely affected by war and internal conflicts, efforts to establish peace and security in this country are significantly overshadowed. A United Nations mission is underway to support the weak Somali government in its fight against the terrorist group Al-Shabaab. However, it seems that the United States, expressing dissatisfaction with insufficient progress, is looking to halt this mission.
The U.S. and Peacebuilding Challenges
The Washington government has recently announced that the expected progress in combating terrorist groups in Somalia has not been achieved, and for this reason, it may soon decide to end this mission. This comes at a time when cutting off cooperation could weaken the Somali government and increase the power of terrorists.
Analysts believe that this decision could have serious repercussions for regional security and, at the same time, create a wave of dissatisfaction and despair among the people of Somalia. Does the United States really intend to play into the hands of terrorists? This question remains unanswered.
