Today in Paris, a pivotal ruling is being issued that could significantly impact the political future of Marine Le Pen, the leader of the French right. The appeals court is set to decide on allegations related to the misuse of public funds and Le Pen's legal status ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Eleven defendants and one serious charge

This case pertains to allegations of misusing the European Parliament's budget between 2004 and 2016. According to claims, representatives of Le Pen's party used funds meant for parliamentary assistants, while these individuals primarily worked for the 'Front National' (now: 'Rassemblement National'). Le Pen has denied responsibility for these charges in court and is now awaiting the ruling.

The court is expected to announce its decision at 1:30 PM local time, and Le Pen will announce at 8:00 PM whether she will run as a presidential candidate in the upcoming election.

Possible scenarios for Le Pen

If acquitted, Le Pen could theoretically run for election. However, if she appeals and the court's ruling remains temporarily in place, her situation will become extremely difficult. Even if Le Pen is sentenced to prison, she may still be able to run under certain conditions, although these conditions could make conducting an effective campaign impossible.

If the court decides that Le Pen should be deprived of her voting rights for more than two years, she will effectively be unable to participate in the election. In this case, the Rassemblement National party may introduce a younger candidate named Jordan Bardella, who would have good chances of competing.

This ruling is significant not only for Le Pen but also for other political parties, as its results could influence the course of the French presidential election.
