This year, Berlin's prisons have repeatedly faced a concerning phenomenon: the discovery of drugs. According to official reports, in the first quarter of 2026, over 2.8 kilograms of drugs, including synthetic cannabinoids, cocaine, and strong painkillers, have been discovered in these prisons.
Drugs and Security Challenges
Among these, synthetic cannabinoids weighing 1,826.57 grams account for the largest share. These substances, which are produced artificially, have effects similar to marijuana but are significantly more dangerous. Additionally, significant amounts of other drugs including 831.95 grams of marijuana, 89 grams of cocaine, and 1.22 grams of heroin have also been discovered.
This data indicates a deeper crisis within the Berlin prison system. In 2025, over 11.3 kilograms of drugs were discovered, while in 2024 this number reached 14.7 kilograms. The question now is whether this increase is due to a rise in drug trafficking to prisons or due to more efficient inspections.
New Measures and Security Challenges
In response to this crisis, the judicial system has taken measures to enhance prison security. Among these measures are the use of search dogs and specialized equipment to detect drug traces. However, these efforts are accompanied by serious challenges. Last year, 69 attacks on prison staff were recorded, a number that is significantly on the rise.
Berlin's prisons, with 4,175 holding places, accommodate an average of 8,670 inmates, and currently, 2,770 people are employed in these prisons. This situation has created tense and dangerous atmospheres for both staff and inmates.
