In the world of police, not all puppies have the chance to become service dogs. In the North Rhine-Westphalia region of Germany, puppies that are removed from the police training cycle for various reasons are transferred to private families. These puppies, mainly of the Malinois breed, are born with extraordinary learning and working capabilities, but some of them are unable to withstand the job pressures due to personality or behavioral reasons.

Difficult Selection Criteria

The trainers of these puppies observe their behavior in various conditions for several weeks to evaluate them. If a puppy cannot pass the tough tests, it does not mean that it has issues; rather, it may simply not be compatible with police duties in terms of personality. According to sources, the number of these puppies is limited to a few cases each year, and they are often handed over to new families at around eight weeks of age.

The price of these puppies for buyers is only 600 euros, while the price of Malinois puppies from professional breeders can reach up to 2500 euros. However, this low price should not lead buyers to make hasty decisions, as this breed requires specific activity and management that many buyers may not be able to provide.

The North Rhine-Westphalia police carefully examines the conditions of buyers to ensure that they are capable of meeting the needs of these puppies. The Malinois breed requires continuous training, a lot of physical and mental activity, and otherwise, they may develop problematic behaviors. Therefore, these puppies are considered the best option for individuals experienced in dog sports or rescue teams.

The North Rhine-Westphalia police training and education office is responsible for these transfers, and interested parties can contact them via email.
