Ernst Schmied and Jörg Marmet, two lesser-known names in the history of mountaineering, are among the second group to set foot on the summit of Everest in 1956. Interestingly, they set an unprecedented record on another peak.
Why Have These Two Climbers Been Forgotten?
Although the ascent of Everest was considered a significant achievement at the time, the story of these two pioneers has largely remained in the shadows due to a lack of media coverage. In fact, these climbers were the first to summit another peak, and this accomplishment received far less attention.
While the history of mountaineering is filled with famous heroes, Schmied and Marmet have a different story. They demonstrated that mastery over peaks is not limited to summiting Everest, and that every peak holds its own stories and achievements.
